Precautions to be observed when driving in a nail:                           

  • Wear eye protection (goggle)
  • Hold hammer correctly
  • Blunt the tip of the nail (toe nail)
  • Drill pilot hole(s)
  • Hammer head should be clean (free from oil, grease and dirt)
  • Hammer head should strike the nail head at right angles
  • Do not use hammer with mushroom head
  • Do not use hammer with broken handle
  • Do not nail along a straight line
  • Use a nail punch to drive nails below wood surface
  • Dip nail tip (point) into oil, grease or bar soap to ensure easy driving in
  • Position the nail correctly
  • Use the hammer face to strike the nail head
