Literature-In-English Paper 3 WASSCE (SC), 2022

Question 5                  JOHN OSBORNE: Look Back in Anger

Consider Jimmy’s views about the Victorian society of his time in the play.

This question requires the candidates to comment on Jimmy’s views about the Victorian society of his time in the play. A few candidates attempted this question.

The candidates’ response should include:

  • A discussion of the central theme of the conflict between the social classes in Victorian/England society which is highlighted in the marriage between Jimmy and Alison.
  • A character identification of Jimmy.
  • His view of the structure of Victorian society: it is divided into working class and middle/ upper class people and based on education and privilege.
  • He finds working class life routine and monotonous: people are generally jobless.  They accept any job like the sweets-stall to make ends meet.
  • The instability of across-class marriages: The marriage itself remains stormy, till Jimmy and Alison begin to make a few sacrifices for love. Alison’s parent’s marriage is, however, stable because it is founded on class, love and convention.

Candidates did not highlight these and thus scored low marks.
