    DELE CHARLEY: The Blood of a Stranger

    Assess Kindo’s reception of Parker and Whitehead.


Observation

 

The question is about the meeting of Kindo with Parker and Whitehead. Most candidates failed to identify the facilitator of the visit and what prompted them to do so.

 

The required answers should include:

 

  • Relation to the themes of colonial exploitation, deception and greed.
  • Character identification: Kindo – Son of Santigi V, King of Mando land, heir apparent and chief warrior; Whitehead – A whiteman,  a colonialist and an exploiter of the diamonds of Mando land in the name of tobacco farming; Parker – An African, Assistant to Whitehead, Secretary, interpreter and advisor.
  • Kindo invokes tradition and custom as reason for opposing Whitehead’s arrival.
  • King Santigi V is lured into receiving Whitehead and Parker; Kindo is disgusted by Whitehead’s disrespect of the king and tradition.
  • Significance of the reception: It introduces the conflict that ensues between Soko/Maligu,Whitehead/Parker and Kindo on the other hand in their contests for influence and power over Mando Land.
