OBSERVATION

Pride means determination for Santiago to succeed in the face of all odds.  He goes far into the sea after many efforts to get his reward.  He struggles with other sharks over his catch and refuses to give up.  He eventually ends up with the skeleton on shore. But his pride is positive and rewarding at the end of the novel.
