This question requires the candidates to account for the account for the contribution of lawyer Nweze to the development of the plot. Most candidates were able to do this.

Candidates were expected to mention the following points among others:

  • The themes of education, marriage, gender disparity, feminism, fatherhood irresponsibility, racism and others.
  • Character identification of Lawyer Nweze.
  • The reception given Lawyer Nweze: the women bought identical cotton materials, dyed their hair, composed songs and danced for him. The men in their numbers pay him a courtesy visit.
  • The portrayal of Lawyer Nweze: he epitomises human aspiration and achievement. He is a source of pride to the people. Ironically, he eventually disappoints his people. He settles in the northern part of Nigeria instead of the south among his people.
  • Lawyer Nweze’s role in the novel.
  • Through him, the superstitious beliefs of the Ibuza are exposed.
  • His portrayal highlights the literacy level in Ibuza and serves as motivation for Adah. 
  • His reception depicts the people’s unity and communal spirit in Ibuza.
  • Lawyer Nweze reflects the people’s respect for education.

Most answers touched the above points and earned good marks.
