Comment on the character of Heatcliff in the novel

This question demands that the candidates comment on the character of Heathcliff in the novel.

Candidates were expected to discuss:

  • The theme of retributive justice and the evil effects of 19th century social class preferences.
  • Character identification:

Heathcliff is an orphan boy picked up from the streets of Liverpool by Mr. Earnshaw and brought to Wuthering Heights. He is integrated into Mr. Earnshaw’s family. He is vengeful and unforgiving. He hates and avoids close human relationships. He has intensive love for Catherine.

  • Heathcliff’s unforgiving spirit leads to his scheming for vengeance on most of the characters in the novel.
  • Significance of Heathcliff’s character: Heathcliff is the embodiment of cruelty and divisiveness. His character also advances the plot. His character reveals the dangers of obsessive love.
  • Lessons: the dangers of vindictiveness and the dangers of vengefulness.
