Question 12

Discuss the theme of change in Yeats; “The second coming”.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Observation

Candidates were required to highlight the theme of change in relation to the poem. The beginning of the poem shows the atmosphere of imminent change. The changes are for the worse. Even the behaviour and the attitude of the people undergo adverse changes. The image of a falcon.
Its flight symbolizes cycle in human history. The image of doom reflects horrible changes "mere anarchy is loosed upon the world" "and war" "The blood deemed tide is loosed". Though very frightening, the image will bring about changes.
Majority of the candidates that attempted this question gave a mere narration of the second coming of Jesus Christ with close reference to the Bible instead of making reference to the poem. This affected their scores negatively.
