Islamic Studies Paper 2 WASSCE (PC), 2016

Question 1

Describe how I‘tikāf is observed with emphasis on acts that vitiate it.

Observation

This was a compulsory question answered by most of the candidates correctly because it is more of a practical aspect of Islam which is normally performed in the month of Ramadan. The question demanded that the candidates give the description of I‘tikāf , where it is observed, who is qualified to observe it and when it is observed as well as the do`s  and don’ts of  I‘tikāf.

Some of the points missed out by the candidates include the intention for the performance of I‘tikāf for the sake of Allah, the observer of I‘tikāf must be a fasting Muslim, I‘tikāf becomes null and void upon sexual intercourse with one’s spouse during the period and all forms of impurity nullify the performance of I‘tikāf.  Generally, Candidates’ performance was commendable except for the few who did not mention things that vitiate it.
