Observation

Question 1(a) required the candidates to enumerate the guidelines for the use of the washing machine. Majority of the candidates wrote on the launder processes such as sorting, mending, removing all stain, steeping or soaking of clothes and washing. Therefore, andidates performed woefully. The expected answers were

  GUIDELINES FOR THE USE OF A WASHING MACHINE

• Follow manufacturer’s instructions strictly.
• Load the washing machine properly/don’t overload.
• Have a supply of hot and cold water.
• Have sufficient water pressure.
• Add water softener, if needed.
• Add enough soap or detergent to produce good lather.
• Use appropriate soap or detergent.
• Make sure you remove sharp objects from clothes before washing.
• Place the washing machine on a level surface.
• Unplug when not in use.

In 1(b) most candidates were unable to state ways to care for a washing machine. Most
candidates wrote on types of washing machine such as double twin top machine, front    
loader,  twin washing machine and automatic top loader machine instead of     

• Wipe the inside and outside of the machine with a clean dish cloth after each use.       
• If scum accumulates in the tub, remove with warm wet cloth and clean thoroughly.
• Leave the machine open to dry.
• Wipe over the outer surface of the machine regularly.
• Roll the flex or cord away when not in use.
• Do not leave the washing machine plugged into electricity supply when not in use.
• Unroll the flex or cord and plug neatly ready for use.
• Service the machine regularly.
