Question 3

     (a)    State five ways to prevent poisoning in the home.
     (b)    List signs and symptoms of poisoning.

Observation

Most candidates related the prevention of poisoning to foods and the kitchen alone and lost some marks.

Signs and symptoms of poisoning was fairly well attempted.

The required answers to the questions are as follows:

            (a)        Ways to Prevent Poisoning in the home        

  1. All medicines/drugs should be kept away from children
  2. All beauty care products such as perfumes, deodorants, lotion etc must be kept out of reach of children.
  3. Cleaning liquids must not be stored in soft drink bottle.
  4. Kerosene, Petrol, Lighter fuel, Methylated spirit and other poisonous chemicals should not be kept where they can be mistaken for water/proper storage.
  5. Do not buy and use camphor that are shaped and coloured like sweet;
  6. Be careful with poisonous garden plants and flowers. Be sure of the ones planted;
  7. Do not eat spoilt food;
  8. Wash hands thoroughly after using cosmetics and other chemicals;
  9. Items should be properly labeled.

 

(b)        Signs and symptoms of Poisoning

  1. Burns around the mouth
  2. Tongue getting dark and swollen
  3. Excessive saliva
  4. Crying in agony
  1. Severe stomach pains (may be holding the stomach)
  2. Diarrhea
  3. Vomiting
  4. Allergic reactions e.g. Cough, Sneezing, hives, watery eyes
  5. Fever
