  1.   (a) State three functions of saliva [ 3 marks ]
  1.    (b) State three functions of the large intestine [ 3 marks ]
  1.  (c) State four ways in which the working of the alimentary canal can be enhanced.     [ 4 marks ] 

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was good.  In   part (a) candidates correctly state functions of saliva.  In part (b) candidates also stated functions of the large intestine.  In part (c) candidates could not correctly state ways in which the working of the alimentary canal can be enhanced.

           However, the expected answers are as follows:

1 (a)     FUNCTIONS OF SALIVA

  • moisten / softens food/aids digestion  
  • lubricates food
  • makes swallowing easy
  • contains an enzyme/ptyalin
  • converts starch to maltose

 
(b)       FUNCTIONS OF THE LARGE INTESTINE 
-          storage of faeces/undigested food until ready for removal /voidance.
-           removal of faeces from the body.
-           absorption of water.
-           production of secretion/mucus which lubricates the rectum
-           serves as a passage between the small intestine and the rectum
 
(c)        WAYS BY OF WHICH THE ALIMENTARY CANAL CAN WORK            EFFECTIVELY
-           proper mastication / chewing of food materials
-           drinking of adequate water
-           eating adequate fibre / roughage in diet e.g vegetables and fruits
-           avoid eating between meals/irregular meals
-           avoid over-eating/starving
-           get involve in regular exercise
