Question 7

Identify five criticisms against the policy of Indirect Rule in the British colonial system.

Observation

This was a popular question. Many candidates that attempted it performed very well as they understood the demands of the question. The candidates were expected to explain the following points in order to score good marks.

            (i)         Indirect Rule excluded educated Africans from the political machinery.
(ii)        Deformation of the culture of the people by imposition of warrant chiefs.
(iii)       The extra ordinary powers given to the chiefs made them to be autocratic.
(iv)       It created disunity and discord between the local chiefs and the educated elite.
(v)        It corrupted the chiefs because of the powers given to them to collect taxes.
(vi)       It made the chiefs puppets or stooges of the colonial master.
(vii)      It denied Africans the power of appointment and deposition of chiefs.
(viii)     It weakened the democratic structure inherent in the African traditional system      of governance.
