Question 8

JAMES TEACHING ON THE NEED TO TREAT PEOPLE EQUALLY (JAMES 2:1-13)

Observation

This question was more popular among candidates. Though candidates gave their own interpretation and version of what they understood equality to be as compared to how James put it. Candidates performed above average in this question. Many of them could not give out the points in an articulate manner as outlined by James in the bible. Candidates were expected to list out points such as;

  1. James in his epistle admonished Christians to be impartial since they profess the faith of Jesus Christ.
  2. This is because Jesus Himself does not show partiality.
  3. James gave an illustration of a rich man nicely dressed and a poor man shabbily dressed both visiting a church.
  4. And it happens that much attention is given to the rich man.
  5. The well -dressed rich man is given a special place to sit.
  6. But the poorly dressed man is asked to stand at an ordinary place.
  7. According to James, in such a situation, discrimination has been made between the rich and the poor.
  8. And this makes people become judges with evil thoughts.
  9. James says that God has chosen those who are poor materially in this world to be spiritually rich in faith.
  10. James holds the view that the poor are the heirs of the kingdom which is promised to those who love God.
  11. James further reminded the believers about how the rich dishonour the poor.
  12. He said the rich consistently oppress the poor and drag them to court.
  13. The rich also blaspheme the honourable name of Jesus.
  14. James admonished believers to observe the royal law which is “love your neighbour as yourself”.
