                                (b)        State the purpose of the following:
                          (i)         swinging shackles;
                          (ii)        centre bolt.
                    (c)        State three advantages of an independent  suspension over the rigid type.
                    Most of the  candidates who attempted this question could not provide the required response  to the various parts of the question.   The required responses to various parts of the questions are:
                    (a)        J – Master leaf or main leaf.
              K – U – bolt.
              L – Spring eye or eye.
              M – Axle.
              N – Spring clip or clip.
                    (bi)       Swinging shackle allow a variation in the  spring length.
                    (bii)      Centre bolt is used to fasten the leaves  together.
                    (c)        The advantages of independent suspension  as compared with the rigid type are:
                     
                                -           the  deflection of one wheel does not affect the other;
              -           more  comfortable ride;
              -           better  steering ability;
              -           better  road holding;
              -           reduced  unsprung weight resulting in reduced tyre wear;
              -           engine  can be mounted nearer the front of the vehicle.
