SECTION A

(a) Explain each of the following woodwork adhesive terms:

  1. Pot life;
  2. Shelf life.

 

(b) State two reasons why the logs for veneer production is steamed before cutting the veneer.

(c) State one function of the bast of a living tree.

3(a). Candidates were expected to state two demerits of creosote oil.  Most of the candidates who attempted this question where writing merits of creosote instead of the demerits.  Hence their performance was poor.

 

The solution is stated below:

 

Two demerits of creosote oil as a wood preservative

 

-  it is dirty and cannot be used where appearance is important;
- it has unpleasant odour;
- it stains wood;
- it is difficult to paint over;
- it is difficult to polish over;
- it is inflammable when freshly applied;
- it is slow in drying;
- it is not suitable for internal use.

 

3(b). The solution is stated below:

 

Difference between temporary fasteners and permanent fasteners as used in woodwork

 

Temporary fasteners

 

- temporary fasteners are fasteners that can be removed, without causing damage to the workpiece or the fastener;
- they are used where dismantling is required;
- they are used for fixing ironmongery to wood;
- they are used for decorative purposes;
- they are used for fixing other materials and wood.

 

Permanent fasteners

 

- Permanent fasteners are fasteners that cannot be removed without causing damage to the workpiece or the fastener.

 

3(c). Candidates performed poorly in the question
