Question 3

p1

A measured volume V of water is poured into a calorimeter of mass MC and a clamped thermometer is immersed in it as illustrated in the diagram above. The temperature, ϴR, of the laboratory is measured. A metal block is put in water contained in a beaker and the mixture is calorimeter. The highest temperature, ϴ, of the mixture is noted.
The procedure is repeated for four other values of V. In each case, ϴ is noted.
Fig. 3(a) illustrates the mass, MCof the calorimeter.
Fig. 3(b) illustrates volumes Vi and Fig. 3(c) illustrate ϴ R and ϴi, where i = 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

  1. Read and record MC and V
  2. Calculate the mass Mw , of the water transferred if the density of water is I  g cm-3, Express Mw in kg.
  3. Read and record the temperature ϴR and ϴi
  4. In each case, evaluate T – (ϴ-ϴR) and T-1
  5. Plot a graph with Mw on the vertical axis and T-1 on the horizontal axis.
  6. Determine the slope, s, of the graph.
  7. Determine the intercept, c on the vertical axis.
  8. Given that e = , calculate k
  9. State two precautions that are necessary when performing this experiment.

(b) (i)    Define specific heat capacity of a substance.
(ii)   A liquid of heat capacity 6300 J K-1 is heated from30oCto 500 C in 12 minutes
