Observation

 

Only a few candidates attempted this question and a large proportion of the scored
below average. The expected responses to the question are as follows.

  •  (i)       Steps to be taken when turning a piece of wood on a lathe machine
  • Cut the length allowing for waste
  • Draw diagonal lines on the ends of the piece to locate centre
  • Punch the centres
  • Set the stock in a way it will not jam the tool rest
  • Remove the corners with a gouge chisel
  • Scrape the surface and turn to diameter

   (ii)     Safety precautions to be taken when turning

  • Always stop the lathe before measuring with a caliper
  • Secure the stock firmly between centres
  • Wear safety goggles
  • Set the stock in a way it will not jam the tool nest
  • Turn the stock manually with hand to ensure everything is okay
  • Always add a few drops of oil to the dead center before turning

(c)        Steps to be taken to cross cut a board on the radial arm saw

  • Mount a cross cutting saw on the arbor
  • Adjust the radial arm to zero at right angle to the fence
  • Adjust the motor so that the blade will be at right angle to the table top
  • Lock the radial arm with the arm clamp handle
  • Adjust the anti-kickback device
  • Square the best end of the board
  • Fasten a hand clamp to the fence at the right distance
  • Place the stock on the table with the square end against the clamp
  • Cut the exact length
