Question 2

                Lā yu’minu ’aḥadukum ḥattā yuḥiba....” (Hadith 13 of an-Nawawi)

    (a) Complete the above Hadith either in Arabic or transliteration.

    (b) Translate it into English.

    (c) Comment on it.

OBSERVATION

 

This question was popularly answered by most of the candidates due to the facts that both the Arabic text and transliteration formats are allowed and those who who performed well are those who filled in the gaps accordingly, its translation and comments posed no problem once the completion of the quotation is well known. The question requested the candidates to complete Hadith 13th of an-Nawawī’s collection translate and comment. Thus:

 

 

 

(a) Arabic text


Transliteration
‘An ’Abī Ḥamzata ’Anas bin Mālikin Raḍiyallāhu ‘anhu khādimi Rasūlillāhi Ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallama ‘anin-Nabiyyi sallallāhu ‘alayhi wasallama qāla: “ Lā yu’minu ’aḥadukum ḥattā yuḥibba li’akhīhi mā yuḥibbu linafsihī  (Rawāhul Bukhāriyyu wa Muslim)

(b) Translation

From Abū  Ḥamzah, ’Anas b. Malik,( May Allah be pleased with him) the servant of Allah’s messenger ( May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) narrated that the Prophet (S.A.W.) said: “ None of you is a true believer until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself ”. (Bukhārī and Muslim related it)

(c) Comment

 

  • The hadith highlights the importance and virtue of mutual love.
  • A true believer should want for his brothers what he wants for himself.
  • He who is indifferent to the affairs and conditions of other Muslims is not a complete believer.
  • It thus urges Muslims to be well-wishers and helpers of their fellow Muslims.
  • It indicates that love is the foundation of the society.
  • It is through love that we can guide ourselves toward what can benefit us.
  • Love is one of those things that add value to the development of our social life.
  • It inculcates Islamic brotherhood and goodwill among Muslims.
  • If the Hadith is acted upon, the Muslim community will be free from all social evils.
  • It lays down a very significant principle of behaviour among Muslims.
  • It teaches that a true Islamic community is when it is built upon love and compassion for its members.
  • It urges every Muslim to care for and help one another.
  • Every Muslim should treat others in ways he wants to be treated.
  • It discourages the acts of greed and selfishness among Muslims.
  • This Hadith emphasizes good neighbourliness and sympathy to one another.
