Chemistry Paper 3 WASSCE (SC), 2020

Candidate's Weakness with Suggested Remedies

Candidates’ weaknesses were as follows:

-           inability to differentiate decimal places and significant figures;
-           reading-off burette to one place of decimal;
-           poor knowledge of chemical equations;
-           inability to write correct inferences from observation;
-           inability to find average titre value using concordant values;
-           inability to follow instructions;
-           some candidates wrote clear solution instead of colourless solution;
-           wrong unit. Some candidates wrote g/dm-3 instead of g/dm3 or gdm-3;
-           wrong positioning of ions. Some candidates wrote Al3+ instead of Al3+.

THE FOLLOWING REMEDIES WERE SUGGESTED FOR OVERCOMING THE WEAKNESSES

The following remedies were suggested:

-           candidates should learn the difference between decimal places and significant figures;
-           more practical activities should be carried out before WASSCE begins;
-           candidates should learn how to write inferences from observations;
-           candidates should be familiar with coloured solutions.
