Biology Paper 3 (Practical), WASSCE (PC), 2022

Question 2

The diagrams below are illustrations of two organisms. Study it and answer questions2(a) to 2(c).

(a)        (i)         Identify organisms A and B.                                       [2 marks]
            (ii)        Name the parts labelled I and X.                                [2 marks]
(b)        (i)         Name the class of organism A.                                   [1 marks]
(ii)        Give three  reasons for the answer in 2(b)(i).            [3 marks]
(c)        (i)         State two observable adaptive features
of organism A for movement in water.                      [4 marks]
(ii)        State two observable adaptive features
of organism B to its mode of life.                               [4 marks]
(d)        (i)         State two  observable similarities  between
organisms A and B.                                                    [2 marks]
(ii)        State four observable differences between organisms  A and B.
[4 marks]

Observation

Candidates were able to correctly identify organisms A and B, but some lost marks to poor spellings.
Some candidates could also name the parts labelled I and X but lost marks to poor spellings too.
Many candidates could not correctly name the Class of organism A and hence, they could not give the reason for the classification.
Some candidates could not state observable adaptive features of organism A for movement in water, neither could theystate two observable adaptive features of organism B to its mode of life.

Candidates could not correspond answers on differences, making them lose the marks allotted to the question.

The expected answers are:

(a)(i)    Identification of Organism
A - Tilapia/snapper/Correctname of bony fish with scales
B -Tadpole

(c)(i)    Adaptive Features of Organism A for Movement

  • Muscular/tail/; for movement, forward propulsion;
  • Streamlined body shape; for easy movement in water;
  • overlapping/flat scales;to reduce friction in water;
  • fins; for movement and balance.

(ii)     Adaptive Features of Organism B
-           tails; for swims
-           streamlined body; for easy movement in water;
-           external gill; for gaseous exchange.

(d)(i)    Similarities Between Organism A and B
-           both have streamlined body;
-           both possess tail;
-           both have eye;
-           both have nostril.
