CANDIDATES' WEAKNESSES AND SUGGESTED REMEDIES

 

The observed weaknesses of the candidates include:

  • wrong and poor spellings of biological names, technical terms;
  • inability to present points in a coherent order;
  • poor diagrams;
  • poor labelling of diagrams;
  • inability to give titles to diagrams;
  • inability to spell the names of insects that undergo the type of metamorphosis stated;
  • inability to name the insect that is associated with chrysalis stage of development in insects;
  • inability to explain the fate of a meal containing fat as it passes through the named organs;
  • inability to state structure and function of structure in adaptation questions;
  • inability to spell the name of the glands that facilitate digestion in humans;
  • inabitily to explain the reason why a boy born to non-colour blind couple is colour blind.

 The following remedies were proffered to overcome the weaknesses:

  • standard textbooks should be used to study;
  • candidates should cover the syllabus before taking the examination;
  • candidates should study ecology and genetics before examinations start;
  • candidates should improve on their written English;

            -     candidates should try as much as possible to spell properly;
-     candidates should read and understand a question properly before attempting it;
-     candidates should read and adhere to instructions;
-     candidates should study past questions and Chief Examiner’s Report;

  • candidates should avoid copying answers;
  • the general principles and terms used in Biology should be studied with practical examples.
