Automechanical Works Paper 2 WASSCE (SC), 2020

SECTION A(a)        The sketch in Fig. 1 is that of a clutch assembly.

(i)         What type of clutch assembly is shown on the sketch?

(ii)Name the parts labelled; W, X, Y, Z.

(iii)State two merits of the clutch assembly.

(b)   Explain the term, clutch slip as applied to automobiles.
(c)   State one function of the front axle of a conventional automobile layout.

Observation

The attempts on the question were not good enough as candidates responded in misconception of what clutch slip is and found it difficult to identify the sketch as a diaphragm spring clutch. Most candidates who attempted a(iii) and (c) part of the question got it right. The solution to the part of the question not gotten correctly is given below.

(a)        (i)         Diaphragm Spring Clutch or diaphragm clutch

(ii)        Name(s) of the part(s) labelled
W:       Centre plate, friction plate, driven plate or clutch disc
X:        Diaphragm spring
Y:        Pressure plate
Z:         Flywheel

(b)        Clutch slip is the failure of the mating surfaces to grip resulting  in the driven plate revolving slower than the engine flywheel
OR
It is the inability of the clutch to transmit the engine torque to the gearbox due to oil or grease on the
linings, insufficient free-play, worn lining, weak pressure plate springs
