Observation

This question was the quite popular although few candidates mixed up the storage
structures and wrong spelling of the structures. Some candidates were unable to
state the precautions that should be taken when using a yam barn.

 The expected answers include:

2.   (a)  Name of storage structures
             I    -    Smoking over fire set-up
             II  -    Barn
             III -    Silo

      (b)  Farm produce that could be stored in III (Silo)
-      Maize                                    -      Wheat                               -      Rice
-      Hay                                       -      Guinea corn                      -      Millet
-      Oat                                        -      Silage

(c)  (i)    Storage structure that could be used by peasant fishermen
-        I (Smoking over fire set-up)

(ii)   Reasons why smoking over fire could be used by peasant fishermen
-    Easy to construct
-    Easy to maintain
-    Cheap to construct

      (d)  Precautions that should be taken when using II (Barn)
-    Yams to be stored should not be bruised
-    Yams to be stored should be disease-free
-    Yams to be stored should be free of pests
-    Barn should be raised above the ground to prevent damage by moisture
-    Spaces should be left between and within yams for ventilation
-    Strong ropes should be used for tying the yams
-    The barn should be covered at the top prevent exposure to rainfall and sunlight
-    Strong sticks should be used as stakes to prevent lodging of the barn
-    Stored yams should be inspected at least once a week to remove rotten/diseased/
pest infested tubers

(e)  Advantages of using III (Silo)
-     It is airtight; hence, pests cannot infest the contents
-     Stored grains are protected from direct sunlight
-     Stored produce are protected from direct rainfall
-     Use of insecticides is more effective
-     Can accommodate large volume of grains/produce
