Observation

This question was not popular among candidates, most of whom scored average marks.The question required candidates to explain fatliquoring, list for protective wears used in a tannery and leather goods workshop and to state any four advantages of fatliquoring. Most candidates were unable to define fatliquoring and state its advantages but were able to list the protective wears that can be used in a tannery and a leather goods workshop. Candidates were expected to answer thus to score maximum marks:

(a)     -  Fatliquoring is a process of introducing oil into leather after tannage in such a manner that the oil is dispersed into the individual fibres of the leather. or
-  The art of impregnating leather after tannage with treated oil to make it soft, flexible and shinning.
(b)(i)    Rain boots.
(ii)    Apron.
(iii)   Hand gloves.
(iv)       Nose mask.
(v)    Overall.
(vi)       Goggles.
(vii)   Thimble
(c)        Lubrication to produce:
(i)     shiny effect;
(ii)    Improvement of flexibility properties;
(iii)   Waterproofing property;
(iv)       Feeling effects – softness;
(v)    Ability to take surface coating – dyeing, painting etc.;
(vi)   puncture resistance – leather does not tear easily.
