Question 3

  1. List any five safety signs to use in a leather goods manufacturing factory.
  2. Outline any five fire precautions to be taken in a leather goods manufacturing factory.

 

Observation

 

Few candidates attempted this question and scored relatively high marks. The question required candidates to list five safety signs use in a leather goods manufacturing factory in the (a) part and outline five fire precautions to be taken in a leather goods manufacturing factory in the (b) part. Most candidates were able to list the safety signs but only few were able to state correctly the fire precautions to take in a leather goods manufacturing factory.
Candidates were expected to answer thus:

(a)(i)                 Sign to show where emergency equipment are located.
(ii)                Sign to indicate where certain actions are prohibited e.g. no smoking sign.
(iii)              Sign to remind workers where personal protective wears must be worn.
(iv)              Sign to provide general information and directions.
(v)               Sign to point out hazards that may not be obvious.
(vi)              Sign to draw attention to health and safety hazards.
(vi)              Sign to indicate flammable items.

(b) (i)               Make sure wires, cords and machinery are in good shape and not overloaded.
(ii)                Never strike a match, light or smoke in areas that initiate or cause fire outbreak.
(iii)               Obey all fire safety signs.
(iv)              Keep exits free of obstacles.
(v)               Chemical and flammable liquids should be carefully stored in approved containers  according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
(vi)               Beware of potential drainages like gas leakages, chemical etc.
(vii)              Keep the factory environment clean.
(viii)             Ensure the right type of extinguisher is located close to the fire hazard.
(ix)                All electrical appliances should be switched off when not in use.
(x)                 Make sure the exits are marked with proper signs.
(xi)                Do not open the lids of fire extinguishers unnecessarily.
