Most of the candidates could not sketch the layout of the fuel supply system for a diesel engine having the in-line injection pump.  The correct sketch is given below.

Part (c) of the question also posed a serious problem to the candidates as most of them stated the function of an injector.  The required response ought to be: 

The injection pump builds up a pressure high enough to force fuel out in a finely atomized spray into the combustion chamber.
