The candidates’ weaknesses include:
(a) Inability to write extensively on the chosen essay titles. They merely listed points instead of developing them.
(b)
Carelessness and lack of knowledge of punctuation marks.
(c)
Poor knowledge of the use of modern Yoruba orthography.
(d)
Deficient/wrong use of tone-marks.
(e)
Inability to write good Yoruba and correct spelling of terms
(f)
Illegible/appalling handwriting.
(g)
Lack of in-depth knowledge of recommended textbooks, especially literature texts.
All these identified weaknesses should be addressed, taught and examined by teachers from the beginning of students’ course to the point of writing WASSCE.
Students should be discouraged from relying on teachers to tell them the stories in the Literature texts, but should be encouraged to improve on their reading culture, so as to improve their Yoruba Language writing skills and expressions. Cooperative efforts could be used to acquire the selected texts.
Qualified and dedicated Yoruba teachers should be employed more, in order to rescue abysmal failure of candidates in Yoruba language examinations.
