Candidates' weakness

The candidates lacked adequate preparation for the examination and many did not study the prescribed texts. Many candidates did not know the difference between some terms, thereby using ‘Ohun’ instead of ‘Oun’. Majority of the candidates are weak in Phonology and Grammar.

Some candidates misinterpreted or didn’t understand some of the questions. Example: questions 1d, 5, 10 and 11. Question 1d is as a result of tone-mark, there was misinterpretation of ‘ilu’ (drum) as ‘ilu’ (town). Also the candidates do not have good knowledge of the language orthography.

There should be intensive coaching for candidates. Candidates could form groups to purchase prescribed texts and study the texts properly.

The school authorities should employ well-qualified Yoruba teachers and ensure that they attend seminars and workshops on the subject. The candidates need to master tone-marks. Teachers should also devote more time on orthography.
