Question 5

Copper of thickness d is plated on the cathode of a copper voltammeter. If the total surface area of the cathode is 60 cm2 and a steady current of 5.0 A is maintained in the voltammeter for 1 hour, calculate the value of d.
        [Density of copper = 8.9 x 103 kg m-3]
        [Electro chemical equivalent of copper = 3.3 x 10-7 kg C-1]

Observation

The expected answers are:

Mass of copper deposited = area x thickness x density =electrochemical equivalent x current x time
i.e. 60 x 10-4 x d x 8.9 x 10-3 = 3.3 x 10-7 X 5.0 x 3600

        d    =  3.3 x 10.7 X 5.0 x 3600
                    60 x l0-4 x 8.9 x 103

        =  1.1 x l0-4 m

This is a numerical problem on electrolysis. Only very few candidates attempted it. The performance of the candidates was also very poor. Most of the candidates could not recall that mass = . Area x thickness . x density and mass = electrochemical equivalent x current x time and therefore equate the right hand sides and make thickness the subject so as to calculate it. They were also unable to correctly convert cm2 to m2
