Question 1

A particle is projected at an angle of 30° to the horizontal with a speed of 250 ms-1
Calculate the ,
(a)total time of flight of the particle;
(b)speed of the particle at its maximum height.

Observation
 The expected answers are:

(a)    The total time of flight T = 2u sin θ
                                                        g
                           = 2 x 250 x sin 30°
                                          10
       =25s (Accept Alternative Approach and follow through)
(b)The speed of the particle at its maximum height = u cos e
        = 250 cos 30° .
        = 216.5 ms-1
This question on projectile motion was very popular among the candidates. The performance was, also fair. Most candidates were able to recall the correct relation for time of flight T == 2usinθ.                                       
                                                                                                                                                g

However, the speed of the projectile at its maximum height which is given by Ucos θ was not well handled. The candidates did not realize that at any stage of the projectile motion, the horizontal component of the velocity remains as Ucos θ.
