Question 1

(a) Give the command for the start of a middle distance race. [2 marks]
(b) State two duties of each of the following officials in an athletic meet
(i) Starter
(ii) lap scorer [4 marks]
(c) (i) State four qualities of a good athlete [4 marks]
(ii) Describe the underhand upward pass style of the non-visual baton take over in a relay race. [3 marks]
(d) Draw a labelled diagram of the long jump pitch indicating all dimensions.[7 marks]

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and the performance was fair. Most of the candidates did not know the commands for a middle distance race. Many candidates erroneously thought that "set" is a command for middle distance race. In addition, many candidates did not know the duties of a lap scorer. Most of the candidates were weak in describing the underhand upward pass style, of the: non-visual baton take over in relay race.
Many candidates could not explain when kick off, goal kick and corner kick are
awarded.

The expected answers were:

(a) The commands for the start of middle distance race are

- “On your mark”
- “Go”/Gunshot/Clapper/Whistle

(b) (i) Starter

- He has control of the competitors on their marks
- He stats all races
- He warns all and disqualifies competitors

(ii) Lap Scorer

- Shall keep a record of the laps covered by each competitor in race from 1,5 meters and above
- Shall notify each competitor of final lap by ringing a bell/blowing whistle

(c) (i) Qualities of a good athlete

- Good reaction time
- Endurance
- Muscular strength
- Flexibility
- Power
- Coordination
- Speed
- Agility
- Balance.
(ii) Description of the underhand upward pass style of the non-visual baton take- over in a relay race.
