Observation

The question was popular with the· candidates. In questions 2(a)(i&ii), majority of the candidates were able to list materials needed by track judges during a 4 x 400m relay race and state the similarities between l00m race and 400m race. Also in question 2(b )(i) & (ii), most candidates were able to state factors that can reduce the speed of a sprinter during a 400m hurdle race and state instances when the red flag can be raised at the start of a sprint race.
However, in question 2(a)(iii) and 2(b)(iii),some candidates were unable to describe the on-­your-mark position of an athlete in a l00m hurdle race and mention facilities needed in horizontal jumping events in athletics. .
The expected answers include:
Description of on-your-mark position of an athlete in a l00m hurdle race.

  1. athlete assumes the squat/crouch position;
  2. place on foot close to the scratch line;
  3. place one knee of the other foot on the ground;
  4. fingers placed on the ground behind the stating line;
  5. fingers pointing sideways;
  6. fingers form a bridge/explained;
  7. arms shoulder width apart;
  8. body, behind the scratch/starting line explained;
  9. athlete stays motionless.

Facilities need in horizontal jump events in athletics:

  1. Runway
  2. Landing pit/area
  3. Take-off area/board .
