This question was popular with the candidates. Only a negligible number of the candidates drew the take-over zone as demanded in the question l(a)(i).
Most candidates could state rules guiding a valid throw in a shot put event in athletics. However, Majority of the candidates could not describe the "set" position and running technique in middle distance races. Also most candidates were unable to describe the
procedure for measuring distance in triple jump event.
The expected answers include:
Description of the set position in a 400 m race:
- The hands still remain behind the sratch/starting line
- The athlete raises the hips higher than the shoulder level
- Moves the shoulders forward/rocks forward over the starting line
- Body weight is shifted onto the arms/fingers
- Both legs are bent at the knee '.
- Head in alignment with the trunk
- Athlete remains motionless and ready to move
- He looks a few metre in front of the starting line.
Running technique in middle distance races:
- The head is kept steady and straight
- The. arms relaxed and close to the body
- The fingers/fists are slightly clenched
- There is low knee fit
- The body almost erect
- Coasting may occur at some sections of the race
- Landing is heel-toe action.
Procedure for measuring distance in triple jump event:
- Place zero end of the tape on the mark made by the athlete on the landing pit nearest the take-off board;
- Run tape through the centre of the take-off board;
- The distance jumped is read off the tape at the inner edge of take-off;
- The reading is to the nearest centimeter.
