Question 1

1. VOICE

(a) What is the difference between voluntary and involuntary breathing?
(b) Mention any three uses of breath control.
(c) Name one Baroque aria each for:
(i) Soprano;
(ii) Bass.
(d) Explain the term, a cappella.

Observation

While most candidates did not have the slightest clue to the questions, others out-rightly avoided it. The expected answers, among others are

(a) voluntary breathing is a deliberate and controlled breathing employed by singers before/ during singing while involuntary breathing is the normal uncontrolled breathing.

(b)   uses of breath control are smoothness, articulation, phrasing, good pitch control etc.

(c) Baroque Arias

(i) Soprano  -   Rejoice greatly Oh daughter of Zion I Know That My Redeemer Liveth Come Unto Him all ye that labour

(ii)Bass  -    The trumpet shall sound   Drop not; young lover Did you not see my lady?

(d)  acapella -  In the chapel style/unaccompanied choral singing.
