Chief Toje sees Oshevire as a rival in the rubber business. The attendant jealousy makes him decide to do away with Oshevire and his obvious success.

The war situation provides a good fertile ground on which Toje’s evil seeds against Oshevire must grow. Toje becomes the only person officially allowed to interact with Oshevire’s family. This he uses to his own selfish end with the help of Odibo.

The near fatal fight between Toje and Odibo brings shame to Oshevire and his opting to leave the town in the dead of night leads to his death.

The question was a popular one, candidates understood tragedy, traced Toje’s action but failed to tie it up to Oshevire’s tragedy.
