Village life is portrayed in the novel as being basically communal. In Lantern lard, the ill deacon is taken care of by members of the assembly who take turns to keep watch over him.
In Raveloe, the people are also their brother’s keepers and take pride in their individual professional skills. They also enjoy chatting and making music.
