The play centers on the effects of a corrupt society on a morally upright man – Thomas More.
The play features the debasement of characters i.e. those who allow their conscience to be bought over. The king sets the stage for conflict in his selfish desire to divorce his wife Catherine and marry his mistress Anne Boleyn.
Characters like Cromwell, Rich and Norfolk succumb to the king against the church.
More is set in his ways and refuses to sell his conscience by disagreeing with the king.
The question was quite popular with the candidates and it was well understood.
