Question 1

(a)        Explain the following terms
                                   
(i)         Energy management
(ii)        Work simplification

(b)        List four general guidelines for choosing household  equipment.

Observation

(a) (i) Some key words like "reserving energy" and preventing fatigue" that were expected from the explanation of energy management were missing.

(ii) Under work simplification; most candidates wrote about things done to make work easier instead of the use of labour saving devices to reduce the amount of time and energy during work.
(b) On guidelines for choosing household equipment the candidates attempted the question very well. However some were thinking of guidelines for meal planning and so they failed.
Candidates are expected to answer the question as follows:
1. (a) (i) Energy management: it is the process of planning and controlling the use of energy in order to preserve it. It also helps in achieving set goals without being fatigued.
(ii) Work simplification: is a process of reducing the amount of time and energy required to accomplish a given piece of work. It is the use of labour saving devices and improved methods while carrying out household chores.
Note: key phrases to look for are underlined

(b) General guidelines for choosing household equipment
(1) The equipment must be considered necessary for the family/the use/
the need.
(2) There should be guarantee from the manufacturer of the equipment.
(3) The equipment should be durable/strong/last for a long time
(4) For major appliances, ensure that spare parts are available for servicing.
(5) Consider the availability of storage space in the house for the equipment.
(6) The equipment should be easy to operate/to use/manipulate.
(7) The family should be able to afford it financially/ money available/cost.
(8) The utilities needed to use the equipment must be available e.g.
electricity.
(9) The equipment should be easy to clean and maintain.
(10) The size of the equipment.
