Question 2

(a)        Explain three forms of marriages.

(b)        State two preparations to be made by an expectant mother for the arrival of the baby.

Observation

(a) Few candidates that attempted the question showed full understanding of the question. Candidates called Islamic marriage mosque marriage. Most of them just repeated where wedding takes place.

(b) This question was not well answered. It was on thing that the mother has to prepare before the arrival of her baby. Some emphasized anti-natal attendance, eating nourishing foods and exercises, missing out the baby’s layette.
The candidates are expected to answer thus:
(a) Forms of marriage
(i) Customary marriage
- also known as traditional.
- bride price is paid.
- different from one ethnic group to another.
- it is a prerequisite for other forms of marriage.
- It allows the man to have more than one wife.
- the parents of the bride hand her over to the parents to the groom.
(ii) Court marriage
- also called marriage under Ordinance/the law - marriage ordinance certificate is given.
- marriage notice of about 21 days is to be given before the contraction.
- The man/woman is not permitted to remarry except in death or divorce
- Wedding rings are exchanged.
- There has to be at least 2 witnesses.
- The court registrar joins the couple.

(iii) Church marriage
- A Minister joins the couple.
- Marriage ordinance certificate is also given.
- Marriage vows are made by couple before the minister, relatives and congregation;
- Wedding rings are exchanged.
- 21 days notice/announcement is given before the day of marriage.
- Marriage registers are signed.
- Man is not expected to remarry except for death or divorce.

(iv) Moslem or Islamic marriage
- contracted according to Moslem rules
- man can marry up to four wives at a time
- only man has the right to divorce the wife
- no legal document is required for divorce

(b) Preparation of an expectant mother

Procurement of the baby’s layette.
- Baby’s cot
- Toiletries for the baby and the mother
- The feeding equipment e.g. feeding bottles, sterilizing unit etc.
- The mother’s clothing needs
- Bathing equipment
- Cleaning of the house
