This was another straight forward but unpopular question. Very few candidates attempted it. The few who did performed very poorly. The candidates were expected to trace how the British initially recognized Nana's position, the subsequent conflict arising from trade relations and the bombardment of Itsekiri kingdom.
The following points were required for the candidates to score high marks:
(i) in 1885, the British got Nana to accept British protectorate over Itsekiri;
(ii) in 1891 a consultant was appointed to cover the area under Nana's control;
(iii) The British began to instigate the royalist against Nana;
(iv) Nana was accused of engaging in local slave trade;
(v) in 1894, Nana was summoned to Lagos to answer charges of blocking trade and slave trading, etc.
