The question was not very popular with the candidates as few attempted it. The few weak candidates who attempted the question were mostly incoherent. To the exclusion of salient points, many dwelt \ the British system of administration and some mentioned the impact of the Sokoto Jihad.
In the (a) part, they were expected to mention the following points:
(i) the use of Islamic laws;
(ii) Islamic scholars helped in the administration;
(iii) division into two administrative units the eastern and western zones etc.
In the (b) part, the following answers were expected:
(i) it was a strong political unit in Northern Nigeria;
(ii) trade and industry prospered;
(iii) it reduced the act of internal slavery;
(iv) the Caliphate was administered and governed according to Islamic laws, etc.
This was a very popular and straight forward question. The kernel of this question should be a grasp of all the internal problems that led to the collapse of Old Oyo. Majority of the candidates that attempted the question performed averagely well.
(i) autocratic tendencies of the ruling class;
(ii) independence of some vassal states;
(iii) weakness of the army;
(iv) lack of able leadership;
(v) loss of commercial supremacy, etc.
