This was a popular question as most candlda1bas appeared versed in the effects of legitimate trade although most answered the question without reference to the Niger Delta.. The general performance was above average. Those who scored high marks were able to identify some of the following effects:
(i)Trade In goods brought much wealth to the people;
(ii)The House' system which was introduced enabled various House’ leaders to assume politica1 powers for maintenance of law and order;
(iii)Trade rivalry existed among opposing Houses due to envy and it led to civiI wars; ,
(Iv)It gave the less privileged class of people the opportunity to rise to positions of power e.g. Jaja of Opobo.
{v)Trade rivalry that evolved between the Africans and the Europeans brought about the use of-Gun-boat diplomacy by the British;
(vi)Gun-boat diplomacy led to loss of sovereignty by the African people, etc,
