This was a straightforward but not very popular question as few candidates attempted it. Majority of those who attempted the question forgot the period In question and concentrated on the effects of European activities.
In the ‘a’ part, they were expected to mention the following points:
(I)Trade between Benin and Portugal flourished
(ii)The middleman position which Benin played between the Portuguese and the Interior brought wealth to the kingdom;
(iii)It led to the Introduction of some aspects of Portuguese culture e.g some Portuguese words and way of dressing.
(Iv)The Portuguese introduced some crops Into Benin e.g. coconut, cassava, etc.
(v)The Portuguese tried to Introduce Christianity Into the kingdom.
In the 'b' part, they were expected to mention:
(i)The doctrine of the Christian faith was difficult for the Benin to follow;
(ii)The acceptance of Christianity by the oba was not genuine enough to convert his people; .
(iii)Inadequate fund;
(Iv)Language barrier, etc .
