This was a fairly popular question. Though some candidates did not take note of the geographical area concerned, a good number of them were able to highlight discovery of America and West Indies which increased the demand for slave labour; the opening up of plantations and mines which needed blacks who could provide cheap labour; greater availability of fire—arms and increase In the number of inter and intra ethnic was, etc.
The candidates' performance in the 'b' part was good. Those who scored high marks were able to describe the following methods:
(i)Domestic slaves were sold to the slave dealers by their masters;
(ii)War captives automatically were sold as slaves;
(iii)There were frequent organized slave raid;
(iv)Kidnapping, etc.
