            (a)        What is drug addiction?
            (b)        (i)        Give four reasons why people consume alcohol.
                         (ii)       State four effects of alcohol on the body
            (c)        List five ways of preventing prostitution.

OBSERVATION

was a more popular question and the candidates performed well. The reason for intake of alcohol as well as definition of drug addiction was poorly treated but most candidates could state the effects of alcohol on the body as well as ways of preventing prostitutions.

Expected answers are:

Drug addiction

  1. drug addiction is a chronic/habitual behaviour, which is harmful to the body;
  2. in which an individual has strong/compulsive desire drugs/drug dependence;
  3. Attempts to stop leads to Withdrawal symptoms/named symptoms;  
  4. Forcing the individual back to drug taking/relapse.

Reason for Alcohol intake
To relieve strains/stress/problems

People drink alcohol as means of forgetting their problems/situations/escapism.
As a family tradition/Culture

      1. the practice of rinsing the mouth in the morning with local gin by elderly
      2. people.
      3. giving young boys local gin as a sign of manhood; copying drinking habits from parents
      4. for religious purposes/rituals
      5. effect of advertisement. .

Social obligations/Peer group
When there is a social gathering one may be served alcoholic drinks e.g. at parties, weddings, naming ceremonies, political business meetings etc.
For pleasure:
To make one excited; for taste; for enjoyment; as a form of relaxation; to escape boredom. Imitation: Drinking to please friends.
To make bold/feel high;
To enable them commit crimes; talk to the opposite sex; raise ego.
