This question was not popular among candidates. The few candidates that attempted the question performed poorly. They could not outline the contributions of Dr. Adewale Omololu and Dr. Thomas Lambo in health education.
The expected answers were:
Managing Mental illness
- Consult a doctor/mental specialist/psychiatrist;
- Administration and monitoring of prescribed drugs;
- Identifying and climinating sources of stress;
- Rehabilitation/reintegration into the society/acceptance by family and society;
- Psychotherapy;
- Group therapy;
- Psychoanalysis.
(b)(i) Dr. Thomas Lambo
- He was a professor and head of department of psychiatry and neurology at University of Ibadan;
- He produced solid scientific evidence about the nature of mental disorders in Africa;
- He looked into the role that cultural and social factors played in mental adjustment;
- He approached the management of mental patients in a creative way;
- The formation of the Aro-mental village scheme involved the creation of a small community for mental patients;
- He encouraged patients to contribute to the life of the community;
- He changed the image of psychiatry in Nigeria;
- He became the first African medical doctor to begin psychiatric nursing training in Africa;
- He was the first African ever to obtain the Haile Selassie African Research award.
(ii) Dr. Adewale Omololu
- He started the institute of child health in University of Ibadan;
- He conducted a research at ilesa on the relationship between malnutrition and diseases in children;
- He estimated that 1 in 10 children die from malnutrition in the first 4 years of age;
- He published works about child nutrition in Africa, nutrition of mothers and nutrition in disasters and emergency;
- He acted as a consultant to WHO in nutrition and maternal health.
