The performance of candidates was below average in question 6 as most of them could not name the conditions under which the liver converts glycogen to glucose. Only a few candidates could state the effects of malnutrition, some candidates wrote on causes of malnutrition. Expected answers include:
Conditions under which glycogen is converted to glucose

  • during fasting/starvation/low glucose/sugar level in the body;
  • during exercise/manual labour;
  • under stress/danger/excitement;
  • when ill/sick.
  • Effects of malnutrition in children Stunted/retard growth;
  • Marasmus/shrunken appearance;
  • Retarded intellectual development/mental retardation; Deficiency disease/kwashiorkor/named;
  • Blindness;
  • Deformities/rickets;
  • Goiter;
  • Cretinism.
