Question 5

(a) State the locations of each of the following structures in the human body.
(i) gall bladder;
(ii) spleen;
(iii) islets of langerhans;
(iv) tricuspid valve [4 marks]
(b) State one function of each of the structures listed in 5(a) above. [4 marks]
(c) List two diseases associated with the circulatory system. [2 marks]

OBSERVATION

This question was poorly attempted by many candidates. Answers to this question which requires the location of various organs in the human body and the function of each of the structures were poorly attempted by many candidates. In question 5(c) many candidates correctly listed sickle cell anaemia and hypertension.
The expected answers were:

(a)(i) Gall bladder - Liver
(ii) Spleen - below the stomach
(iii) Islets of langerhans - In the pancreas
(iv) Tricuspid valve - between the right ventricle and right auricle.
(b)(i) Gall bladder - stores bile/bilirubin
(ii) Spleen - Stores red blood cells/blood aids in the production of lymphocytes.
(iii) Islets of langerhans - Produces insulin
(iv) Tricuspid valve - Controls the flow of blood from the right auricle to the right ventricle.

(b) Arteriosclerosis, varicose veins, AIDS, hypertension, heart failure, coronary thrombosis, stroke, leukaemia, sickle cell anaemia, haemophilia.
