(a) Name the parts labelled I to VIII [4 marks]

(b) State the functions of the parts labelled III, V and VI [3 marks]

(c) State three disorders associated with the structures in the diagrams
[3 marks]

This question was attempted by majority of the candidates but their performance was poor. In 1 (a) candidates mixed up the answers; they could not mention or name the parts sequentially. In 1 (b) candidates were required to mention the functions of the labelled parts – fibrous membrane, pup cavity and dentine but only few got the answers correctly.
In 1 (c) where candidates were required to state three teeth disorders, some were able to give only two.
The expected answers were:


1. Teeth
(a) 1 - Nerve endings and blood capillaries
11 - Bone/Bone of jaw
111 - Fibrous membrane
1V - Cement
V - Pulp cavity
V1 - Dentine
V11 - Enamel
V111 - Gum


Functions
(b) 111/Fibrous membrane- cushions the tooth against excessive pressures of biting and chewing.
V/Pulp cavity – living tissue of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels/nourishes the tooth.
V1/Dentile – Hardest substance which protects the inside of the tooth/protects against decay.

(c) Disorders of the tooth
Gingivitis/red, swollen gums/discoloration of the teeth;
Periodontosis - Wasting of enamel overlapping of the teeth
Toothache/tooth decay
Dental caies
