This was a popular and straightforward question. Most candidates that attempted the question did very well in the 'a' part. That is, they were able to define Fundamental Human Rights as the inalienable freedoms and privileges that, individuals are entitled to in a state e.g. right to life; freedom of movement, etc. On the other hand, a number of candidates that attempted the question found the 'b' part a bit difficult. Instead of writing on the ways of safeguarding the rights, they listed the Fundamental Human Rights in error. The overall candidates' performance in the question was average.
Candidates were expected to identify some of the following means of safeguarding Fundamental Human Rights:
(1) entrenchment of Fundamental Human Rights in the constitution;
(2) existence of free and impartial judiciary;
(3) existence of free and independent media;
(4) citizens must be educated to defend their rights;
(5) enactment of laws that protect the rights of individuals, etc.
